1000000/10 The most wonderful place that I have visited here in Mexico. From the moment we walked in, We were greeted and welcomed in with some much love. The space is just beautiful and very historicial, so many pieces around the property that shows how they built Edward James garden. The size of the room is perfect, with a nice soft bed and of Course the views!! The views all around the hotel is just amazing. Breakfast was ready for us at 8:30, with hot coffee and some banana bread. The best! The staff are super friendly and helpful as well. My favorite part, was the secret bar that is attached to the hotel and opens at night time. You can go through a tunnel snd you will enter to a bar with great food and even better drinks. And then my second favorite, the host! Luisa. Thank you for being such a beautiful host to us. We were lost with a few things and you managed to help and guide us with those small things. Which any tourist appreciates so much!!

If you make the trip to Xilitla specifically to see the Edward James sculpture garden then you must stay here. The two places are connected on a deep level, and a stay at El Castillo will give you a deeper sense of the relationship between Edward James and the family of Plutarco Gastelum, his friend and collaborator on the garden sculptures. Moreover, the hotel itself is like a peek into the mind of Plutarco, who was every bit the surrealist himself. Rooms are lovely and historic (one of the rooms is James' old bedroom), staff is great. Highly recommend.

My friends took me to a trip Xilitla for my birthday (July 2024). I briefly reviewed about the small town over the internet but didn’t have too much expectation about the town. But it turned out to be one amazing unforgettable trip in Mexico and one of the main reason was this hotel. Its not a fancy hotel but its a very charming hotel with wonderful staff. I felt very welcomed and comfortable. There are some rustic feel but they’re trying to preserve the authenticity of Gastelum and James history. I can see some improvements are being made so I look forward returning there in the future. I highly recommend. The owner is very accommodating so I recommend everyone to communicate clearly what your needs and plans. My friend asked the owner to bake my birthday cake. Also they arranged the guided tour with transport. Simply amazing. Its a small boutique hotel so they need time to prepare so if you want to make it great trip, you need to let them know ahead of time.

Visting from Charlotte, NC. My wife and I decided to stay here on a quiet Tuesday night. Breakfast included was amazingly delicious and authentic as it gets. Its a family hotel, passed down generations. It felt like we were staying in a museum almost, walking distance to the center of town. Has a pool for a hot day and at an extra cost they provided us with a guided tour through Edward James Castel. Great experince, would recommend it to anyone.

If visiting Xilitla for the surrealist Las Pozas sculture garden, Edward James, and Leonora Carrington, there is no better choice than to stay in this place! It is still owned by the Gastelum family, and it is the most amazing location one could imagine. It's essentially a museum that you can live in, full of history and wonderful art. The hosts are simply wonderful, providing exceptional tours of the place as well as of the scupture gardens.

This place is excellent. Very attentive staff, great location, loved our stay here. The rosa room is architecturally stunning. Highly recommend

Even though we already have a place to stay in town, we decided to stay at the Castillo with a friend who was visiting Xilitla for the first time. It was a wonderful experience. The rooms were beautiful and comfortable. The food and service were exceptional and the birthday cake we ordered from Luisa was out of this world. The location was perfect, as it gave us an opportunity to explore the town and return to the room to rest. I would highly recommend a stay at the Castillo.

Such a special treat to stay in the actual home of Edward James with all it’s original character. Louisa helped us with everything from dinner by the pool to a guided tour of Las Pozas the next day, which made traveling with two small children that much easier. The breakfast is amazing - including home made banana bread, which our kids loved! Would definitely go back again and recommend this place very highly if you are interest in Edward James or Leonora Carrington. There are original murals and art works installed in the dinning and living rooms.
